Does Cold Weather Affect My Sleep?

With winter going full throttle I have begun to question whether or not the decrease in temperature outside is affecting how well I sleep. To be sure, I am compensating by increasing the temperature of the room but somehow I feel that my body is still aware that just past the wall there is a lot of chilly blustering going on.

Perhaps even with the thermostat on high – the surrounding air still carries with it a thread of frigid humidity and that is what still sends a sliver of cold down my spine and makes me linger ‘neath the covers a little longer. But I’m inclined to think that because i know it’s cold outside my mind is convincing my body that it needs to go on the defensive and get as much rest as possible.

I can’t really say that my sleep is any better. I’m still waking up every few hours and it’s not easy to get back to sleep. However, some of the restlessness is diminished and perhaps it’s due to the atmospheric changes that signal that winter is naturally a time for hibernation for many mammals – so why not us?

If during the winter I manage to get a bit of extra rest, so be it. Bring on the cold….
