Medication – Is it the answer? (Part 1)

To medicate or not to medicate – what is the answer? Like so many situations it is an individual’s choice. There are a number of factors to take into account however. Whatever decision you make it will be important to weigh the long term effects. And remember, never be shy about inquiring of professionals what they may have in the way of information on any course of treatment.

In the search for a good night’s rest an individual may feel that they need to go the route of over the counter and prescription medication. Although these types of drugs have become more and more popular it still remains a good suggestion to not take these things lightly.

Understandably it can be very tempting to treat the symptom of sleeplessness in stead of searching for what might be any one of a number of causes. That takes time and effort. And in todays fast paced world it may seem imperative to get the solution as fast as possible by using any source possible.

While one may occasionally rely on the use of these drugs it can happen that it becomes a habit. Instead of understanding what is causing the problem of their insomnia and finding a cure, an individual relying on these drugs will only end up masking the real issue.

In fact, it has been found that sleeping pills can begin to interfere with REM sleep. An essential aspect of a good night’s rest. Over time these sleeping aids can disrupt the deeper stages of sleep. And some experts have found that if these is kept up the patient will eventually find their insomnia paradoxilly getting worse.

The other aspect of using any type of drug is the prospect of negative side effects. In the case of many over the counter medicines the range of side effects can include confusion, dry mouth, feeling agitated, and depression. In some reported incidents there has been a worsening of symptoms regarding an enlarged prostate. In others, there are problems with water retention and constipation.
